Electrodiagnostic testing

This is a non-invasive and objective test for retinal and optic nerve function. Because of the comprehensive and specialised nature of the test, you need to set aside up to 3 hours for this appointment, although the exact timing may vary depending on the protocol used.

Our highly-skilled staff will measure your visual acuity, and your pupil will be dilated. Electrodes and wires (see photo) will be placed around your eyes to measure the electrical impulses during the test. You will be shown different visual stiumli, such as flashes of lights or checkerboard pattern on a screen. You will need to keep your eyes steady during the test and keep your facial muscle relaxed for the most accurate assessment. Muscle contraction during the test, such as gum chewing, will significantly degrade the tracing.

In some protocols you may need to sit in a dark room for around 20 minutes (dark adaptation). During this time, you must not use your smartphone or any other light emitting device as this will affect the outcome of the test.

We will often complement electrodiagnostic testing by obtaining multimodal imaging (Spectralis OCT, autofluorescence and Optos imaging) and visual field assessment to help us with the diagnostic process.
